A Bunch of Mugs and a Pitcher 19, Alcohol Kicks 6
On a warm, windy evening at
Latrobe Field, A Bunch of Mugs and a Pitcher (1-0) began the Fall 2004 Kickball season with a bang, downing the inexperienced
Alcohol Kicks (0-1) in their Ropewalk Division opener, 19 to 6. The victory marks
the first Varsity level win for the Mug franchise.
After holding the Mugs offense
in check in their initial at bat, the Kicks, better known as A.K., started off strong in the first inning. After placing a lead runner on, Big Slick stepped to the plate and launched a homer to take an early 2-0
lead. Weary of a flop, the Mugs knew this was no time to fold. They would immediately counter in the next inning, raising A.K. by a run with rookie Brian Pietryka’s
three run bomb deep to left field. However, A.K. showed little fear when it was
their turn, upping the ante with a three run inning of their own. The Mugs defense
quickly stiffened, though. Showing signs of last season’s form, the Mugs
called A.K.’s bluff as they were able to hold’em to a single run the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the Mugs offense raked in the runs as they raised the stakes at every opportunity and turned
in a record setting performance. Slugger Greg Berdzik led the charge, popping a homer to go along with stars Lanika Hawkins
and Dawn Geary perfect nights at the plate. Unstoppable Suketu Sonecha and Aaron
Ricks thrilled the fans also. These five elusive veterans combined for an amazing
twelve hits and ten runs. Not to disappoint, prized recruits Lindsay Lauenstein
and Morgan Carter displayed excellent poise as well, pairing for five hits in their debuts.
Overall, it was an excellent performance by the Mugs, one that is sure to be noticed.
Next week, the Mugs will look to double their wins
as they host the Dirtstars (1-0) on Latrobe Field #2 at 8:30 PM.
