Mugs  4,  The Zephyr Competition Team  4 (9 Innings)

Like the westward wind, *The Zephyr Competition Team (0-0-1) arrived on the pitch with a long list of accolades: a KLOB Championship, a handful of Final Four finishes, and one of the league’s best franchise winning percentages.  A Bunch of Mugs and A Pitcher (0-0-1) was well aware of the Zephs’ accomplishments, but did not fret their foe’s formidable past and was further determined to prove their own place among the league’s upper echelon.  On a warm, humid September eve at Latrobe Field, the Mugs battled the Zephs toe-to-toe, tying the former champs 4 to 4 after nine innings of intense kickball action.  Without a winner, both teams felt as though they had just kissed their sister.

After a long off-season, the contest’s early goings proved troublesome for a rusty Mug defense.  After jumping out to a 1-0 lead, the visiting Zephs used some tactical kicking to load the bases with only one out in the first.  However, pitcher Mike Randolph took matters into his own hands, lunging acrobatically to his right to snare the next kicker’s line drive and double off the runner on third to squelch the threat.  The Mug’s offense then stepped to the plate and quickly proved the Zephs’ lead insubstantial.  Leadoff man Brian Pietryka, and strategists Morgan Carter and Lindsay Lauenstein effectively navigated their ways around the bases in succession to stake a 3-1 advantage for the Mugs.  The game quickly became a defensive struggle as both teams stepped it up a notch and turned in outstanding performances in the field.  Randolph and first baseman Greg Berdzik highlighted the effort; on a Zeph ball struck crisply up the middle, the tandem teamed up on a catch, making the time spent on the team’s preseason tip drill look ingenious.  Unfortunately for the Mugs, the Zephs gradually chipped away at the lead, tying the game in the bottom of the 5th.  After trading single runs in two extra innings of play, the foes settled for the dreaded tie, leaving both teams anxious for a rematch to settle the score.

Next week, the Mugs will look to get a little more than a kiss from their sister when they pay a visit to Littering and…  Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm on Upper Latrobe’s Field 1.
