A Bunch of Mugs and a Pitcher 12, Charm City Chuggers 2
On a brisk Thursday night, A Bunch
of Mugs and a Pitcher (1-0) opened the Spring 2004 Kickball season on a positive note, defeating the Charm City Chuggers
(0-1) 12 to 2. In what is being described as a total team effort, the Mugs avenged the heart wrenching, extra inning
defeat dealt to them by the Chuggers in last season's finale.
Fresh off of an extremely successful, undefeated, unchallenged, and untested
Spring Training, the Mugs shined in every aspect of the game. Reports indicate the only thing that may have shined brighter
were the lights gleaming in their faces.
Sporting the new look Metro Blue uniforms, the Mugs played a near flawless
game of offense and defense, seemingly scoring at will and shutting down the Chuggers whenever they desired. Free agent
signings Dave Packer and Jason Budden made several clutch catches and defensive plays throughout the game, instantly proving
to the club they're worth every penny of their lucrative contracts. Rookie Brian Pemberton highlighted an offensive
charge that saw nearly every kicker reach base. Pemberton, fighting off-season steroid allegations (which may prove
true given the tightness of his jersey), added fuel to the fire by blasting a homer in his second career at bat to cap a four
run fifth inning.
The Chuggers were not easily discouraged, however. Hoping to mount
a comeback in their last at bat, they quickly placed two runners on base. But pitcher Mike Randolph remained cool and
collective, and put down the threat with some strategic pitching, including a unique 5-ball intentional walk. In the
end, great fun was had by all and a celebration of good cheer ensued.
You can catch the Mugs in action again next Thursday when they take on
the Harm City What? at Latrobe's Field 4. Game time is set for 8:30.
