Kobra Kai 4, Mugs 3
A cold chill emanated from the damp Thursday night sky. With mud oozing from every orifice of the saturated ground, A Bunch of Mugs and A
Pitcher (0-1) anxiously awaited the start of their 2005 Spring Season. Their
opponent, Kobra Kai (1-1), a once feared powerhouse hit hard by free agency this past off-season, took to the field sporting
a squad of fresh faces. The Mugs sensed their weakness and hoped to capitalize. Seeking an early lead, Mug’s leadoff man Brian Pietryka-san efficiently navigated
his way home to stake a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. However, Pseudo Kai
showed poise and responded with a run of their own to knot the score in the bottom half of the second. A defensive battle ensued and the Mugs settled in. Over the next several innings, sure-handed veterans
Dawn Geary-san and Meghan Keating-san each made key catches to keep the contest gridlocked.
The tide changed in the top of the 5th, though. With a runner
on third and two outs, rookie Matt Frese-san stepped confidently to the plate and tapped a well placed ball down the third
base line allowing the runner to score easily. Running like a MFer, Frese-san
continued to circle the bases, notching his first career home run and providing the Mugs with a two run advantage. Unfortunately for the Mugs, their lead was not safe. Pseudo
Kai mounted a comeback, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth and sneaking the winning run in the seventh. It was a gut wrenching defeat for the Mugs, but one they will definitely remember should they meet their
foe again.
The Mugs will look for their first win next Wednesday night
in a primetime match-up at 8:30 on Latrobe’s Field 1. They will be attempting
to score as much as possible on Your Mom.
