Dirtstars 1, A Bunch of Mugs and A
Pitcher 0
With the remnants of Hurricane Ivan looming on the horizon, A Bunch of
Mugs and A Pitcher (1-1) were dealt a startling 1 to 0 defeat at the hands of the upstart Dirtstars (2-0) Thursday night at
Latrobe Field. It was a frustrating loss for the heavily favored Mugs, one that
is sure to be a hard pill to swallow.
One week after exploding for a team record 19 runs, the Mugs offense seemed
primed for another spectacular performance. Unbeknownst to them, the Dirtstars
had other plans. To start the game, Coach Shelly Ward attempted to spark the team with a well-placed kick in the bottom of
the first. But the Mugs offense sputtered and was unable to push any runs across
the plate. Fortunately for the Mugs, their defense stayed true to form as they
were successfully able to shut the Dirtstars kickers down, surrounding a single run to their opponent midway through the game.
Pitcher Mike Randolph turned in a fine performance on the box, striking out more than a handful of Dirtstars. Slick fielding Dave Packer manned the hot corner, making several key defensive plays. Ole reliable Brian Pemberton and Jason Budden turned in stellar games as well, seemingly blanketing the
outfield and successfully holding the Dirtstars at bay. However, despite their efforts, the Mugs offense remained grounded and the Dirtstars prevailed.
The Mugs will return to action in one week when they face off against accident
prone Oops, I Crapped My Pants. In this higly anticipated rematch of last season's first round playoff game, the Mugs
will roll out the first pitch on Latrobe's Field #2 at approximately 8:30 PM.
