Mugs 6,  Federal Hill Houdinis 0

The Federal Hill Houdinis (1-2) were unable to escape A Bunch of Mugs and A Pitcher  (2-1) Thursday night at Latrobe Field, falling to the visitors 6 to 0.  The shutout is the first for the Mugs in almost exactly one year.

The Mugs began the game strong, posting an early two run lead in the top of the first.  The magical Mug defense then proceeded to suffocate the Houdinis, handcuffing almost every kicker.  Pitcher Mike Randolph kept the opponent off balance all night, tricking the audience with his classic double-left-foot illusion.  Randolph’s tricks were so effective, the only scoring threat the Houdinis mounted came in the bottom of the fifth when they managed to load the bases with no outs.  The Mugs remained calm, though, they knew it was all just part of the show.  First baseman Greg Berdzik hauled in a pop fly for the first out and quick thinking Cathy Strong followed, snagging a line drive and stepping on second for an unassisted double play to end the inning and preserve the goose egg.  For extra measure, the Mugs offense tacked on some insurance runs.  With the bases loaded, slugger Dave Packer launched a deep shot to left.  Speedster Meghan Keating challenged the Houdini fielders and attempted to make the corner to corner trek from first to third.  Unfortunately for Keating, the Houdinis pulled off a supernatural play of their own and threw her out sliding into third.  But Keating was the master of deception, immediately rising up and racing home.  Unsure of what just happened before their eyes, the Houdinis chased down Keating to tag her out again, allowing Packer to sneak his way to third.  Strategic Dawn Geary then provided the final punch to the Houdini stomach, kicking a well placed sacrifice to score Packer on the next play.

The Mugs will attempt to protect their goods again next week when they visit the Ball Busters.  Game time is set for 6:30 PM on Latrobe's Field 1.
