Mugs 2, The Zephyr Competition Team 1
In a battle of two premier
teams, A Bunch of Mugs and A Pitcher (3-1-1) edged out The Zephyr Competition Team (2-3-0), defeating the visitors 2 to 1
Thursday night at Latrobe Field. The win is the first ever for the Mugs over
the perennially powerful Zephyrs.
In the top of the first,
a close defensive battle looked like a long shot as the Zephyrs whirlwind attack loaded the bases with nobody out. However, the Mugs defense braced for the storm and used first baseman Aaron Ricks’ unassisted double
play to slip out of the inning unscathed. Without hesitation, the Mugs offense
made their move in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded and no outs,
strategist Greg Fine lined a deep shot to right for a sacrifice fly to crack the scoreboard.
The opportunistic Cathy Strong then tagged a single to load the bases again and was immediately followed by precisionist
Greg Berdzik’s chip shot which allowed hero Matt Frese to trot home with what would later prove to be the winning run. Not going down easy, the Zephyrs did manage to respond with a run in the top of the
third, but the ever reliable Mug defense stiffened when called upon. Surehanded
Dawn Geary and Sabrina Truesdell made key two out catches with runners in prime scoring position to help ensure the Mug victory.
Make sure to come out next
week when the Mugs take on the division leading Highballs & Cocktails. Game
time is set for 6:30 PM on Latrobe’s Field 2.
