Homeland Security 3, A Bunch of Mugs and A Pitcher 2
Homeland Security (5-2) apprehended A Bunch of Mugs and A Pitcher (5-2) on a cold, rainy Wednesday night at Latrobe Field.
Reminiscent of past contests in the storied rivalry, the final 3 to 2 margin came down to the game's last at bat.
Hoping to clinch the Ropewalk Division's #1 seed for the play-offs, the Mugs began the game strong, attacking the unsuspecting
Homeland for two runs in the top of the first inning. However, the two runs would be all the offense the Mugs would register
as the Homeland raised their awareness level and successfully snuffed out additional threats before further damage could be
done. Defensively, the Mugs put forth another admirable performance. Thanks in part to some key Greg Fine catches, the Mugs
held the Homeland to only one base runner throughout the first five innings. But by the bottom of the sixth, the Homeland,
having cracked the code, loaded the bases and threatened to tie the score. In traditional Mug style, though, the defense
quickly stiffened and shortstop Shelly Ward stepped up and caught a line drive to stop the rally. Nursing a one run lead,
the Mugs began to sense the Homeland was not as susceptible as they may have first thought and tried in vain to tack on some
insurance runs. Unfortunately, another Homeland offensive strike was imminent. Having played down the entire game, the Homeland
scored two dramatic runs in the bottom of the seventh, snapping the Mugs four game winning streak.
The Mugs hope to return to their winning ways next Thursday night in the first round of play-offs at Latrobe Field. They
will conceivably represent the Ropewalk Division's #4 seed, pending the outcome of today's games. Stay tuned for more details
forthcoming.
