#3 Mugs 2, #14 Beer Run 1

#3 Mugs 4, #6 Ball Busters VIII 3

For the first time in franchise history, A Bunch of Mugs & A Pitcher (7-1-1) successfully advanced to the KLOB City Finals.   To secure the elusive spot, the Mugs used a pair of narrow one run victories; beating Beer Run (1-7-0) in the first round and Ball Busters VIII (5-3-1) in the second.

In the opener, the Mugs cracked the Beers immediately as speedster Lindsay Lauenstein raced home to open a quick 1-0 lead.   After a scoreless second, pitcher Mike Randolph helped his own cause leading off the third with a single and working his way around the bases in textbook fashion to double the score.   From then on, however, the Mugs offense laid a brick and relied on their defense to pull them through.  The second base combo of Dawn Geary and Morgan Carter made sure not to disappoint, turning in some nifty glove work to ensure the Beers were out and allow the Mugs to chug another round.

In the nightcap, the Mugs took on the Ball Busters in a seesaw affair.  Lauenstein duplicated her earlier first inning feat, scoring a run to give the Mugs the initial 1-0 advantage.   But the Balls were well rounded and took a lead of their own by the top of the fourth.  Sensing trouble, expert ball handler Eric Mack went on the attack, slugging a homer to knot the score.   Riding the wave of momentum, the opportunistic Brian Pietryka followed with a triple and easily scored to reclaim the lead.  Unfortunately for the Mugs, the Balls remained loose and tied the score again the very next inning.   However, the renowned Mug defense had fooled around enough and using surehanded Cathy Strong's catch, left the Balls offense blue the rest of the way, setting the stage for a dramatic ending.  Not to dissapoint, the Mugs strategically loaded the bases with one out and the score still tied in the bottom of the seventh.   Hero Dave Packer then stepped to the plate and shot a BB to centerfield, easily plating Pietryka from third for the walk-off finish.

The Mugs will be back for one final night this season when they pay a visit to the unfamiliar confines of Patterson Park next Thursday at 6:30 PM.   The opponent is yet to be determined, but will likely be Canton's #2 Seed.
