#3 Mugs 20, #11 Dixon's Cider 5
On an extremely windy night in Baltimore, A Bunch of Mugs (8-1-0) won both
Canton Playoff games, cutting off Bonesaw (2-6-0) with a narrow one run victory before blowin’ Dixon’s Cider (3-5-1)
out on twenty runs for a second consecutive week. The two games of offensive fireworks notched the Mugs their first
100 run season in franchise history. The opener was supposed to be the easy one; the Mugs thought they would
cremate the Bones, but got some rather stiff competition instead. The Bones rattled the Mugs early on with two monstrous
homers to score their first six runs of the game. Fortunately for the Mugs, though, slugger Dave Packer returned the
favor, getting the meat of his foot on a ball for a three run round tripper, snapping the Bones lead, and getting the Mugs
in position to win the game. But it was hero Matt Frese who broke the Bones’ back, racing home for the winning
score on a bonafide Suketu Sonecha sac fly to short. In the second round, the Mugs found themselves gettin’
Cider for a second straight week and, for the second straight week, had no problem putin’ Cider in their place by handin’
Cider another lopsided loss. The Mugs were launching bombs left and right, backin’ Cider fielders up all night.
Taking advantage of the extra space, stars Brian Pietryka, Eric Mack, Jess Wilson, Katie Mills, and Leanne Lauenstein each
turned in perfect games at the plate, softin’ Cider up defensively. On the other side of the ball, strong armed
Aaron Ricks led the charge, gunning down a slidin’ Cider runner at first base, dryin’ Cider hopes of mounting
any sort of comeback.
With the wins, the Mugs have clinched a spot in the City Finals for the
fifth consecutive season. The Finals will be held next Thursday on Utz Field in Patterson Park. The quarterfinal
game time is yet to be determined, but will likely get rolling around 6:30 PM.
