Smurf Balls 5, A Bunch of Mugs and A Pitcher 3
In the first round of the Fall 2004 Kickball Playoffs, 10th seeded Smurf Balls (6-2) upset 7th seeded A Bunch of Mugs and
A Pitcher (5-3), defeating the home team 5-3 Thursday night at Latrobe Field. It was a disappointing end to another largely
successful Mug season.
Primed for a playoff run, the Mugs offense wasted little time getting started in the bottom of the first. With speedsters
Morgan Carter and Jason Budden reaching base, slugger Dave Packer confidently stepped to the plate and launched a two-out
triple deep to right field. Packer would then trot home on an RBI single by the next batter, giving the Mugs a commanding
3-0 lead. Unfortunately, the Mugs offense quickly sputtered and was unable to tack on any more runs the rest of the way.
To compensate, the Mug defense buckled down and attempted to snuff the Smurf's potent offense. Suketu 'Happy Feet' Sonecha
performed admirably, making several key catches and completing an unassisted double play at first. In the end, however, the
Mugs defensive efforts fell short as the Smurfs successfully rallied to score five unanswered runs and advance their team
to the second round.
With the loss, the Fall 2004 Kickball Season officially comes to an end for the Mugs. Stayed tuned this spring, though,
when the Mugs will return to action and kick their best foot forward in another attempt to capture the elusive Coors Light
Kickball Cup.
NOTES: Offensive specialist Lindsay Lauenstein completed her eighth straight perfect game at the plate, safely reaching
base in both of her plate appearances. Lauenstein finishes her season with 18 hits in 18 at bats, securing a plaque in the
Kickball Hall of Fame and earning an extra patch for her varsity jacket.
