On a freezing cold, November night, the best season in A Bunch of Mugs and A Pitcher (8-1-1) history officially came to a close in the second round of the KLOB play-offs.  After disposing of Littering and… (2-6-1) in the opener, the Mugs met their match and were tapped out by Kick the CEG (7-2-1).

In the first round, the Mugs discovered the Litter, a familiar foe they had trashed earlier in the regular season.  This time around was no different.  Kicking specialist Brian Pietryka led an early offensive surge, not wasting his chance to score two runs and help the Mugs establish a commanding 4-0 lead.  On the defensive side, the Mugs cleaned up nearly all the rubbish the Litter kicked their way.  Canadian Suketu Sonecha pitched in with an unassisted double play and pitcher Mike Randolph teamed up with an alert Dave Packer on a highlight reel play.

In the nightcap, a much more formidable foe awaited, Kick the CEG.  The CEG arrived with a handful of credentials; 2004 Fall Champs, 2005 Spring Runner-Up, and numerous City Final appearances.  But the Mugs were not scared and were ready to put up a stand.  First baseman Aaron Ricks started the game out right for the Mugs, outwitting the CEGs with an unassisted double play.  Not to be out done, tactician Matt Frese turned his own a few innings later.  However, the real storyline of this game was the pitching.  Randolph put forth yet another admirable effort, chugging along for seven innings and holding the CEGs to a measly two runs.  Meanwhile, the Mug’s struggled against the CEG’s pitcher’s dizzying offerings, only mounting a serious threat in the bottom of the fourth when the engaging duo of Greg Fine and Dawn Geary led off with back to back singles.  Unfortunately for the Mugs, the CEG defense pumped it up a notch and kept them off the board.  In the end, the CEG once again advanced to the City Finals leaving the Mugs to reflect on yet another successful campaign.

The Mugs will return to action again for the Spring 2006 season when they look forward to taking another stab at capturing the elusive KLOB Cup.  Rumor has it they will be holding spring training in Ottawa this February.
