Mugs 10, Winners are
Sober Losers 4
Belligerent Drunken Buffoons 7, Mugs 2
The KLOB City Finals were held in Canton Thursday night on Utz Field. For
a third consecutive season, A Bunch of Mugs and A Pitcher (7-3) was there, opening the night with a 10 to 4 pounding of Winners
are Sober Losers (7-1-1) before succumbing to the Belligerent Drunken Buffoons in the next to last round. The Mugs and Buffoons
became part of KLOB history by representing two of the three Canton League teams to advance to the semifinal round. No more
than two Canton teams had ever advanced that far in the same season before.
The visiting Mugs thought they may have their hands full in the opener,
stumbling at the start with two outs and nobody on in the top of the first. But consecutive base kicks by sluggers Katie Mills,
Jason Budden, Matt Frese, and Jess Wilson lit up the Losers and gave the Mugs a comfortable five run lead. In turn, the Losers
offense would take some shots, scoring three runs by the end of the second. But the Packer Brothers, Brian and Dave, managed
to bag any opportunities the Losers thought they may have, sparking a defensive surge that saw only one Loser reach base the
next four innings. In the end, the Losers were left hanging over the disappointment of a six run defeat.
The Mugs then turned their attention to the Buffoons in the next round.
Unfortunately, the Buffoons were no joke and quickly jumped out to an immediate 3-0 lead. From there, the Mugs defense stopped
clowning around and didn't allow more than a single run in an inning the rest of the way. In the meantime, the Mug offense
used two Budden runs to keep hopes of pulling off a trick alive before eventually falling short to the fools in the end.
Despite ending the season with a loss, the Mugs can take solace in the
fact that they advanced further in the playoffs than they ever had before. The offense proved to be a large contributing factor,
enjoying perhaps their most productive season in franchise history while setting team records for on base, bases, and runs
scored. Next season the Mugs hope to do one better, though, as they will once again renew their quest for capturing the elusive
KLOB Cup.
