A Bunch of Mugs (9-2-0) wrapped up their Spring 2008 season, once again falling
just short of the elusive KLOB Cup in the semi-finals of the City Playoffs. The Mugs showed We Come From Behind
(7-2-1) the back door in the quarterfinals before cracking against the Belligerent Drunken Buffoons for the
second time this season.
In the opener, the Mugs used a perfect game at the plate by speedster
Lindsay Packer and some crafty base running by Katie Mills to slap the Behind with an early seven run deficit.
From there, the Mugs defense took over. Pitcher Brian Pietryka spanked the Behind kickers with a mix of pitches, making
the runs difficult for the Behind. The Behind did have enough gas to sqeeze out a few towards the end, but the Mugs
victory was never in doubt.
In the semis the Mugs were up against the former champs, the Belligerent
Drunken Buffoons. Thirdbaseman Dave Packer did his part to keep the game close, fooling several Buffoon kicker with
some acrobatic plays. Left fielder Jimmy Lien had some tricks as well, turning an unassisted double play to humor
the crowd. In the end, however, the Buffoons antics proved to be too much and the Mugs season came to a disheartening
end.
Despite falling short of their championship goal, the Mugs did enjoy one
of the most succesful campaigns in franchise history. The Mugs set several offensive records this season,
scoring nearly 50 more runs and tallying almost 200 more bases than they ever had before. They accomplished these feats
while reaching base an astonishing 60% of the time! Will next year be their year?
